Sometimes it helps to smell the flowers (or essential oils)

BY Lizelle Verrall

Although aromatherapy with the use of essential oils is often associated with relaxation, it also holds health benefits from stress relief, to pain management, to improvements in blood pressure or depression! For the ladies struggling with a snoring significant other, there is even an essential oil solution to help with that!

Seeing as the MeacoMist Ultrasonic Deluxe 5-in-1 humidifier has the added extra of an essential oil tray, we thought it could be good to look at some essential oils and their uses.

Top 10 Essential Oils to start you off

Lavender Oil has a beautiful, versatile aroma. It is anti-bacterial and is a must-have for your first-aid kit. Its calming and sedative properties make Lavender Essential Oil a wonderful oil to help relax, fight stress and to promote sleep. Also great for allergies!

Chamomile is very good for the treatment of nervous conditions and insommnia. It is anti-bacterial and antiseptic but is mostly valued for its anti-inflammatory properties. It  is particularly good to use with children and can help with tetchiness and teething problems!

Not only is Peppermint great for allergy-relief, it is also good for stimulating the mind and improving clarity and alertness. If you want to get rid of mice, mosquitoes or ants, this is the oil to reach for!

It is best known for its effectiveness against coughs, colds and rheumatic conditions. It is also great for boosting the immune system and relieving aching muscles. Good for allergy-relief as well.

It is useful for respiratory issues and makes a good expectorant/decongestant. Rosemary is quite stimulating and is heralded for help in memory retention and staying focused and alert. Rosemary is a good choice for blends for driving long distances and for long study sessions.

Lemon Essential Oil has a powerfully fresh traditional lemon fragrance that is quite energizing and uplifting. Lemon Essential Oil is a good choice to diffuse when trying to clear a room of the smell of cigarette smoke or other unpleasant aromas.

This oil can be diffused to alleviate stress, and some people find that it helps to reduce migraine headache pain as well. For home use, diffuse the oil to repel mosquitoes and flies. The scent may also help to alleviate stress, anxiety or panic attacks, depression, and insomnia. It helps slow breathing down and has a calming effect on emotions. It is also one of the most useful oils for respiratory infections, especially when used in aromatherapy massage. Frankincense can also help with those dreaded wrinkles!

Rose essential oil has very feminine qualities and so is very valuable in helping with menstrual problems or women who are suffering from depression, tension or just feeling sad perhaps as a result of a break-up. The effects on an emotional level are probably just as important as those on a physical level.

This is a very balancing essential oil which seems to work wonders on the mind, body and spirit! It is frequently used as an anti-depressant and also has antiseptic and astringent properties.

Grapefruit Oil is a wonderful energizing oil that isn't too strong or overpowering. Use it in the mornings or at times of the day when you need a bit of a boost. Great to use with other oils such as Rosemary and Frankincense.
