Keeping your cool in the summer - Solenco South Africa

Keeping your cool in the summer

As temperatures start to rise, we look to convenient ways of keeping our cool during the warmer days ahead. One of the simplest ways is to increase air circulation.

The Solenco solution

The lightweight MeacoFan 260c Cordless Air Circulator is a great companion to help cool down your room, yourself and your family. You are able to charge it via a standard USB port, which means it is an ideal fan for home or office use, as well as for activities that take you off the grid. On a full charge the fan can run for 14 hours, and then with a convenient USB charging port, you can plug it into a laptop, wall socket, or any charging point and within 6 hours it’ll be back to 100% charged and ready to blow your hair back. Another wonderful feature of the 260c, is its ability to be used as a night light even when running on the battery. You can choose to have the lights on to act as a night light, or you can switch them off if you prefer.

Alternatively, there’s the portable MeacoFan 650 Air Circulator. It efficiently operates at 3.5 watts and can run off your main power or via USB-C, and when the power fails you, it has a 20 000 m/ah power bank on board to keep you cool for 4 to 6 hours. It is compact enough to use on your office desk or bedside table, and at 20dB it is also incredibly quiet, so it won’t interrupt your dreams. The 650 also comes with the option of keeping the lights on or off depending on your preference.

The desk or counter-top MeacoFan 1056 Air Circulator also quietly boasts an operating sound of 20dB. It is delightfully energy efficient, needing just 9 watts to operate, and through its multi-directional oscillation it can circulate a whopping 1056 cubic metres of air around your room each hour so that everyone in the room can benefit from its cooling capabilities. As with the other models, the 1056 has the option of a night light for those who like to have a bit of light in their room at night.

Due to its success, the MeacoFan 1056 is now available as a height-adjustable pedestal fan with all the same benefits and technology but without taking up any table space. The MeacoFan 1056P Pedestal Air Circulator has 12 fan speeds and four modes of operation: normal, natural, sleep, and eco. So, you can choose the setting that suits you.

Here are a few tips on how to strategically use a fan or air circulator to maximise the benefits.

1. If you find that your house is particularly muggy and the air outside is cooler, you can place a fan in front of an open window so it can suck in outside air to cool down your home.

2. If you suffer from allergies or if you’re in an area with high pollution levels, you may prefer to keep your windows closed to keep pollen and other allergens outside. In which case, you can place a fan in front of your air conditioner at a low setting to help quickly circulate air. This will help to cool down your room and it will also save on electricity costs.

3. It is widely known that cold air sinks as it is denser than warm air. So, in your home, the closer you are to the floor, the cooler you will be. Place a fan on the floor so that it can drive the cooler air up to mingle with the other air in the room and cool down the space.

4. If you have two fans at your disposal, you can strategically position them to create a cross breeze. This will help to ensure the air circulates throughout the room. One fan can be placed in a window to draw cool air into a room, and the other fan can be placed near a door to draw the warm air out. Tip: A fan that rotates counterclockwise is pulling air in from the back and blowing it out in front. Likewise, a clockwise rotating fan will pull the air in from the front and blow it out the back.

5. To counteract the drying effects of a fan, you can hang your laundry in your room. The damp clothing will add moisture to the air, and as the water evaporates, it helps to draw heat away from the air.

6. To increase the cooling effects of a fan, you can place a bowl of water or a bucket of ice in front of it. As the air passes over the ice, it will be chilled and will circulate the cold air around the room. This will also add more moisture to the air and increase your room’s humidity. Alternatively, if you plan ahead, you could freeze some water in plastic bottles and place them on a tray covered with a damp cloth in front of the fan.

7. You can use a fan to aid with sleep, not only because when your body is cooler you fall asleep faster, but also because of the white noise that a fan emits. White noise is said to help you get a better quality night's sleep by masking environmental or outside noises that can disturb sleep. It also trains your brain, acting as a signal that lets your brain know when it is time to go to bed.

8. In a humid environment, a fan helps to reduce the humidity level as it blows away moisture-laden air, replacing it with dry air that can then absorb more moisture. The lower humidity results in your body feeling cooler as it is able to sweat, and the evaporation of that sweat cools you down.
