Dehumidifier Compressor or Dessicant ?

Detailed Product Description

Top of the Which? Dehumidifier Best Buy Table 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Dehumidifier ReviewHQ said - "It’s hard not to be impressed with the Meaco 20L Platinum. It literally sucks water from the air and had no problem dealing with the harsh test conditions we put it through. It is really easy to use, comes packed with energy saving features and can be left to run virtually unattended. When compared to other refrigerant dehumidifiers we believe this one comes out on top and, because it is backed by Meaco’s fanatical support, is a perfect buy which you can have complete confidence in."

The most common question that we get asked by customers is 'how much does it cost to run a dehumidifier', which is a reflection of the cost of electricity in South Africa these days. Meaco has always made their dehumidifiers as efficient as possible to keep costs to a minimum and now with the Platinum Range of dehumidifiers they have taken this to a whole new level.

With this 20 litre in particular the savings can be huge.  Just compare it's power consumption of 255 watts with other 20 litre models on the market and you will start to see that the difference is considerable.

Unusually for a compressor dehumidifier the 20L Low Energy is an excellent performer at low temperatures as well, something that was noted in the Which? review.

The HEPA filter is proving to be very, very popular with customers and is the only type of filter that you can buy with a dehumidifier to remove allergens smaller than the eye can see from the air such as pollen, dust mites, mould spores and pet dander. Adding to this great product is the added Air Purification Function. When the compressor of the unit is switched off and Air Purification Mode is activated, the Meaco 20L Low Energy Dehumidifier will serve as an air purifier and clean the air of your home

Meaco had the Platinum Range tested at a leading international independent laboratory in Hong Kong against the most up to date standard and it passed the highest possible level. To achieve this standard of excellence Meaco has had to make sure that each individual component was of the highest quality to maximise efficiency. This means that we can confidently say that the Meaco Platinum Range creates a new benchmark and their proven quality sets them apart from the rest of the market.

There are three models in the range, a 12 litre dehumidifier, this 20 litre model and the 25L Dehumidryer, all offer lower running costs than their peers.  The Meaco 20L Low Energy Dehumidifier is top of the Which? Best Buy table two years running and was Best on Test in a Scandinavian test as well.

  • Number one dehumidifier in the Which? dehumidifier tests.

The HEPA filter has proved to be a very popular extra with most people buying the HEPA filters when they buy the dehumidifier.  The filters are what are called True HEPA filters which means that they conform to international standards and capture 99.97% of particles that have a size of 0.3µm or larger.  This makes a huge difference to those that suffer from allergies and also will prolong the life of your dehumidifier.  There is one free HEPA filter in the box so you can try it out to see if you feel the benefits - you can also try the dehumidifier in Air Purifier Mode to turn it into a standalone air purifier!

*The unique Meaco control logic means that you get the best balance between saving money and accurate dehumidification.  When the target relative humidity has been reached the dehumidifier will switch to fan only mode to check that the relative humidity is stable.  It will then go to sleep for 30 minutes at which time it will wake up and run it's fan again to check the relative humidity once more.  If the relative humidity has risen above the set point then the dehumidifier will start to operate again.  If the relative is ok then the dehumidifier will go back to sleep again for another 30 minutes.  This process saves a lot of money on electricity, especially when compared against dehumidifiers which keep their fans running permanently regardless of the level of humidity in the room.

We are very proud of the Meaco Platinum Range and we feel that as a specialist dehumidifier manufacturer this is exactly what we should be doing, pushing the boundaries of what is possible and then challenging the industry to come and join us in designing and supplying dehumidifiers that move the technology forward and make the answer to 'how much does it cost to run a dehumidifier' - 'a lot less than it used to, especially if you choose Meaco

Top quality product and great service
Tina - 05 June 2019 -

The Meaco 20 L is a very well designed machine, easy to use and move around. Although it makes a sound while working, it is not noisy. As another reviewer says, the build quality is very high, and the water container is easy to remove and put back. I have not found the interface to be difficult at all. You set the desired humidity, and the machine remains on until the humidity reaches that level. Then it goes into standby. It wakes up every 30 minutes, tests the humidity and then goes to sleep again if the humidity is still low, or starts working if it has risen above the set level. The machine can also be used for air purification by using a HEPA filter and setting it to use the fan only. It comes with a free HEPA filter in the box. I received excellent advice from Solenco about which size unit to buy, and great support when I've had questions about settings. We have had no problems with the Meaco at all and are very satisfied with our purchase. We bought the Meaco in Feb 2019 to help control high humidity in our Pietermaritzburg house. In December 2018, the humidity inside was so high that we had mildew growing on our leather sofas and wooden furniture! Since getting the Meaco, this hasn't happened again. I highly recommend the machine and Solenco.
Fantastic high end product let down by confusing setup
Richard Hagan - 03 August 2018 -

This is my second Meaco dehumidifier, having previously owned a DD8L which gave up after 3 years of hard work. On the whole I'm very happy with my purchase. The 20L has a much better perceived build quality with a bunch of features that I am really enjoying compared to the DD8L. The water tank is a hefty 6 litres meaning it can run for longer before needing to be emptied and when that time does come, the tank slides out effortlessly (versus the DD8L which you have to really wrestle with) and there's a nifty carry handle allowing you to take the tank away for emptying very easily. The unit comes pre-assembled with small castor wheels on its base so you can move the unit around really easily, which is good because it's a lot heavier than the DD8L due to its compressor system. Overall the 20L has a really beautiful look and feel - all the edges are rounded and clean and everything about it oozes luxury. My biggest and only complaint is that I found (and continue to find) the setup of the 20L to be very confusing and user unfriendly. To set the desired relative humidity, you are required to flick through a selection of values on the 3 digit LCD screen and then stop when you reach the one you want but it is never clear to me whether or not I got that bit right, especially because there are other values at the end of that list that again, are only selected by flicking through that list. There is no confirmation from the software that you have selected a particular value. It's literally just as confusing as it sounds. Then secondly, the 20L appears to jump between relative humidity readouts. It's frequently happened to us that it'll be in standby with a reading of 75 on the LCD, then switch itself on and instantly the reading drops to 55 or 56 which is roughly what I set the target humidity to (or at least, I think I did). The only thing I can think is that the 75 on the LCD reflects something other than the relative humidity? I really have no idea. Another related confusion is that I've found sometimes the 20L will be in standby for some time, then switch itself on and run for maybe 30 seconds, then go back into standby mode. It doesn't make any sense why it would do that - how can 30 seconds make any difference to the humidity? Ultimately all I can say is that right now I'm living in hope that the 20L is doing what I think it's supposed to be doing. One aspect I'm really enjoying is that the air produced by the 20L is not heated as it is in the case of the DD8L (due to the different dehumidification tech employed by the two units), so it's not constantly heating up our small apartment. For those of us living in hot climates, this is really a difference that I value versus the DD8L. If you live in a hot area, consider rather getting the 20L.Despite my complaints, I would buy the 20L again. It's a slick unit with excellent build quality, a nice big water tank and an overall pleasant experience (if you can ignore the horrible software/configuration aspect). I give it 4 stars: Minus 1 thanks to the confusing setup/operation elements.
