How HEPA filters work

After hearing about the raging fire at the landfill in Pietermaritzburg yesterday, it led to the reason behind this blog to help you understand how HEPA filters work.

HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. How it works is by forcing air through a fine mesh that traps harmful particles such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites and tobacco smoke. True HEPA filters remove particles from the air as small as 0.3 microns - smaller than the eye can see.

We have a range of Air Purifiers and Dehumidifiers which are fitted with HEPA filters.

The Solenco CF8608 Air Purifier can clean an area of up to 80m².

How can a HEPA filter and a Air Purifier help me after a fire?

The fire from the New England Road landfill site in Pietermaritzburg is even more dangerous than the average veld fire.

Dheran Ghela took to twitter and posted the following

'Being choked to death in PMB, the municipal landfill site is on fire since early yesterday. Schools in the area have been closed. Toxic plume covers the entire PMB. Result of years of poor management, no recycling program in place.'

The Solenco CF8608 Air Purifier is fitted with 3 filters

Pre Filter - which removes larger airborne particles - in relation to the fire the pre filter will capture pieces of ash in the air.

True HEPA filter - removes smaller particles from the air.

Carbon Filter - removes smells and odours.

The enhanced charcoal and HEPA filters on the Solenco CF8608 have a rubber gasket seal to ensure that no air leaves the air purifier uncleaned.

In addition to the filters this Air Purifier is also fitted with a UV-C lamp and a Ionizer.

With this combination the Solenco CF8608 Air Purifier has the ability to capture and destroy bacteria and viruses and results in a 99% reduction of E.coli, P.Citrinum and A. Niger. This unit therefore comes highly recommended to protect your home and public facilities - like schools. It further reduces VOCs, toxic fumes and foul odours - like those that the public living around this fire are currently experiencing.

An extremely quiet unit that can be operational in living and bedrooms assuring you clean air to breathe while you sleeping.

A big positive for this particular Air Purifier is the dust sensor to indicate the indoor air quality by means of  an auto-function further automatically adjusts the fan speed accordingly.

Clean the air you and your family breathe... because your health matters!
