Air Purifiers and Ozone

On hearing the word ‘ozone’, those of us who paid attention at school may remember their science teacher warning them about a pollutant gas, a smog that can be harmful to human health and the environment. Perhaps they then move on to thinking of imminent doom and the end of life altogether as we know it.

Air purifiers and ozone

Personally, we feel like ozone has been given a bad rep. Yes, high concentrations of ozone at ground level are certainly going to pose significant health problems for all forms of life.

But as a naturally occurring layer high up in the Earth’s atmosphere, ozone is a powerful bodyguard, protecting everything down below through absorbing up to 99% of harmful UV rays from the sun.

Moreover, in air purifiers, ozone is a spring cleaner, removing strong odours and chemicals hanging in the air. Essentially what it does is replace bad smells in your house with a good one.

So what exactly is ozone?

Ozone is a gas made up of 3 atoms of oxygen, occurring high up in the Earth’s atmosphere. It exists as both a natural and man-made gas, the latter manifesting as a toxic byproduct of industrial and transportational activities.

In a world of increasing industrialisation and heavy reliance on machinery, it’s no surprise that the levels of ozone are highly regulated globally, to ensure that humans aren’t exposed to toxic levels of ozone.

At ground level, ozone pollution can have drastic effects on the health of humans such as:

  • Coughing
  • Sore/scratchy throat
  • Pain and difficulty in breathing deeply
  • Airway inflammation
  • Susceptibility of the lungs to infection
  • Lung diseases like asthma, emphysema, as well as chronic bronchitis
  • Recurrent asthma attacks

When does ozone become toxic?

According to the Food and Drug Administration, ozone is considered toxic indoors when it reaches levels above 0.05ppm.

On a professional level, workers are required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to not be exposed to an average ozone concentration of above 0.10ppm for 8 hours.

Outdoors, EPA’s National Ambient Air Quality Standard for ozone is 0.08ppm for a maximum of 8 hours.

On any occasion, a maximum ozone limit of 0.10ppm is not to be surpassed as is recommended by The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.

What levels of ozone do we emit?

Even though our air purifiers are state-of-the-art additions to your home, we understand that you might be concerned when it comes to ozone and the health of your family.

We’re here to put your minds and hearts at ease.

The Solenco air purifiers use a multi filtration system that includes a pre filter, H13 Medical Grade HEPA filter, carbon filter and a UV-C light with PCO, emitting ozone levels less than 0.05ppm which by the medical standard is considered more than safe!
