Get Water For Household Use From The Air!

Residents of Cape Town are finding themselves in a water crisis and the City of Cape Town on Wednesday approved Level 4 water restriction, which limits residents to 100L of water per person per day! Residents are further banned from using municipal water for outside and non-essential use.  These restrictions came into effect yesterday.

However, even amidst a drought, there can still be many water vapour molecules in the air, which in turn increases the humidity of the air. Cape Town is one of the many coastal towns that are in the unique position of experiencing high relative humidity during a time of drought. On average, Cape Town experiences humidity levels of between 60 and 80% throughout the year! The reason though that this humidity is not leading to rain, is simply because the water molecules are in the gas phase and do not condense to form clouds that eventually grow to raindrop-sized particles. The humid air near the ground must rise, which will cause clouds to form and possibly precipitate. Without that air rising, there can be a lot of uncomfortable humidity while in a drought condition.
This in short may be good news to Cape Townians as with the help of a dehumidifier, you can literally extract the excess moisture in the air (even if it is in its gas form) to store for use around the house, such as flushing the toilet, washing a car, mopping floors, watering plants. It will in turn bring down the household water consumption tremendously.
However, and this is extremely important, this water is NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION! The water extracted from the air also contains the impurities in the air, such as VOCs and other pollutants, and if ingested can be harmful to your health.
Dehumidifiers ideal for the Cape Town climate include the following:
Meaco DD8L Junior Desiccant Dehumidifier
Meaco DD8L Standard Desiccant Dehumidifier
Meaco DD8L Zambezi Desiccant Dehumidifier
*Meaco 12L Low Energy Dehumidifier with air purification function
*Meaco 20L Low Energy Dehumidifier with air purification function
*Please note that you still cannot consume the water extracted by these dehumidifiers.
