Which Dehumidifier Should I Use In My Home?

So you’ve identified that you have a mould or condensation problem in your home due to high humidity, but the question still remains: Which dehumidifier will be best suited for your application?

This is probably the most commonly asked question that we get asked at Solenco and unfortunately it doesn’t always have one simple answer as it would depend on a few factors, namely:

What is the size of your home or area you need to use the dehumidifier in?

This is important to know as many people think that bigger is better. This is not necessarily the case.

The Meaco 12L Low Energy Dehumidifier, for example, will comfortably keep the humidity levels in check in a single room to an average-size 3 bedroom single-storey home. For a larger home of 4 to 5 bedrooms, we recommend the Meaco 20L Low Energy Dehumidifier.

Is your home single or double storey?

For multiple storeys, you would need a dehumidifier for each level. Say for example you have a double-storey home with a large entertainment area of approximately 150m2 downstairs and three bedrooms with bathrooms upstairs, a Meaco 20L Low Energy dehumidifier will do fine for the downstairs area and a Meaco 12L Low Energy Dehumidifier for the upstairs area.

Which part of South Africa do you live in?

Do you live in a region of South Africa where you are experiencing damp problems only during winter, such as the Western Cape, or are you experiencing high humidity levels right through the year like those living in Durban or George?

Is your home generally warm or cold?

Desiccant dehumidifiers, such as the Meaco DD8L Junior, Meaco DD8L Standard and the Meaco DD8L Zambezi, tend to heat the dry air slightly which in turn is welcome in a home that is on the cold side, but of course in a warm house one doesn’t necessarily wish to add extra heat to the already warm area and therefore a compressor-type dehumidifier such as the Meaco 12L-AH , Meaco 12L Low Energy or Meaco 20L Low Energy dehumidifier will be more suitable.

Are you a light sleeper or heavy lifter?

Do you battle to sleep with noise around you or does white noise help you drift off to dreamland faster? If you are a light sleeper then the desiccant range of dehumidifiers will be better suited for you - although our compressor type dehumidifiers operate just below normal conversation level on high speed.

If you lack physical strength and prefer to have a unit that is easy to carry around, then again the desiccant type will be your first choice.

Do you suffer from allergies?

Those suffering from mould, pet dander or dust mite allergies can benefit from a dehumidifier that has either a HEPA filter, such as the Meaco 12L Low Energy Dehumidifier or Meaco 20L Low Energy dehumidifier, or an antibacterial filter and ionizer such as the Meaco DD8L Standard and Meaco DD8L Zambezi dehumidifier. If the dehumidifier, however, will be used in an unoccupied space, such as a holiday home, boat or caravan in storage, walk-in safe or basement and allergies don’t pose a problem, then the Meaco DD8L Junior or Meaco 12L-AH dehumidifier will more than suffice.

The above questions are only the tip of the ice berg when it comes to matching a dehumidifier to your specific individual needs. However, once we know this basic information, we are well on our way to getting your problem sorted.
